Wireless Broadband

Wireless Broadband Internet

Mobile broadband allows you to access the internet from almost anywhere without a phone line or cable connection. All you need is a capable device and a contract with a Wireless Internet Service Provider (WISP) and you're set.

All mobile broadband connections will require a wireless modem, dongle or card to connect to the internet. Most providers of mobile broadband will offer the option of including this modem in the monthly plan cost, or buying it outright. You can also bring a modem from another mobile broadband provider and use it with a sim card from your new provider.

A Mobile broadband connection will let you browse the internet, download music or send and receive emails from almost anywhere in Australia. If a mobile phone has reception it is generally safe to assume a mobile broadband connection will also work in your area.

The only drawbacks of wireless broadband are the relative cost of browsing and the lack of coverage in some areas. In exactly the same way as a cellular telephone network, Wireless broadband is also susceptible to interference from weather and location.

Many Mobile broadband plans incur excess download usage fees when exceeding the monthly download quota. You will need to consider this potential cost when deciding what plan is right for you.

Mobile broadband is not a viable option for heavy users with large video and file downloads. For general web browsing, email and the occasional music track download a mobile broadband service offers you the freedom to stay connected wherever you are.

Be aware that Wi-Fi or a WAN (Wireless Area Network) are not wireless broadband. They are simply means for users to share one broadband internet connection through the use of a wireless modem.
