• Free speed boost: Eligible FTTP and HFC users on fast plans get automatic upgrades from 14 Sept 2025.
  • New tiers added: NBN 500, 750, 1000+, and 2000 plans offer much faster speeds.
  • No extra cost: Most upgrades are free, but newer hardware may be needed to enjoy full speeds.

Big changes have arrived to Australia’s broadband landscape. On 14th September 2025, NBN rolled out higher speed tiers for eligible homes and introduced automatic upgrades for many existing customers.

If you’re already on a fast plan and have the right connection type, you could soon be enjoying dramatically faster Internet speeds at no extra cost.

This rollout represents a significant step forward in future-proofing Australia’s broadband network - boosting performance, improving value, and giving consumers more choice than ever.

What’s changing: New NBN speed tiers

NBN is upgrading existing tiers and introducing a brand-new ultra-fast option. The changes apply to Fibre to the Premises (FTTP) and Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) customers.

Current tier New tier New speed Connection types
NBN 100 NBN 500 500/50 Mbps FTTP & HFC
NBN 250 NBN 750 750/50 Mbps FTTP & HFC
NBN 1000 NBN 1000+ 1000/100 Mbps FTTP & HFC
New NBN 2000 2000/200 Mbps (FTTP)
2000/100 Mbps (HFC)

Who is eligible for the free speed upgrades?

If you are already on an NBN 100, 250, or 1000 plan and connected via FTTP or HFC, you’re most likely eligible for a free automatic speed upgrade when the new tiers launch.

Customers on Fibre to the Node (FTTN) or Fibre to the Curb (FTTC) won’t be able to access the faster speeds until their premises are upgraded to FTTP. A national upgrade program is currently underway, giving eligible homes the opportunity to switch to FTTP at no cost.

nbn® has announced the Targeted FTTP Upgrade program, which will move selected FTTN and FTTC homes to full fibre from July 2027. No high-speed plan required. Most FTTN and FTTC homes can already upgrade now via Fibre Connect without waiting for a notification.

Check FTTP upgrade eligibility at your address.

If you're unsure about your connection type or upgrade eligibility, it’s best to check with your Internet provider or a broadband comparison service.

Will the upgraded speeds cost more?

No - for many customers, the speed upgrades will be automatic and free of charge. If you’re already paying for a high-speed plan, your monthly cost will likely remain the same, while your speeds will improve significantly.

That said, if you choose to move up to the new NBN 2000 plan, expect to pay a higher monthly fee. This plan is designed for extreme usage, including heavy streaming, cloud backups, large file transfers, and households with many connected devices.

What you need to enjoy the faster speeds

While the NBN infrastructure will deliver faster speeds, your home setup plays a big role in how much of that speed you’ll actually experience. To make the most of your upgrade:

  • Check your connection type. You need FTTP or HFC to qualify for the upgraded tiers.
  • Upgrade your hardware. Older modems and routers may not support gigabit or multi-gigabit speeds. Look for models with gigabit Ethernet ports and Wi-Fi 6 or Wi-Fi 7 capability.
  • Use high-quality network cables. To maximise performance, ensure your Ethernet cables and switches are Cat 6 or above.
  • Position your router correctly. For optimal Wi-Fi coverage, place your router in a central location away from obstructions.

Why this matters for Australian households

These upgrades are more than just a speed boost - they represent a major shift in how Australians can experience the Internet at home. With the rise of 4K/8K streaming, cloud-based gaming, smart home tech, and hybrid work, more bandwidth is a necessity - not a luxury.

The new NBN tiers allow users to do more, faster, and with fewer interruptions. Plus, automatic upgrades mean better value for existing customers without lifting a finger.
